One week ago I checked something off of The List. I went with my friend Erin and we got our nails done before her wedding. I wouldn't mind checking that off of my list again! =)
Something I thought was on my list and wasn't? A limo ride. So I checked that off of the list, too... even though it wasn't on the list. lol
The wedding was absolutely wonderful, though I was a bit tired by the end of the weekend. Congrats to Erin!
My dear friend Erin changed her last name today! =) I've been pretty busy since Thursday... thus the lack of posting on here. Right now I'll just say a bit about Thursday night and save the rest for later.
My mom drove me to the mall on Thursday so I could meet Erin there. We ran a couple of errands and then went to our girl party. =) We made muffins, apple dip, homemade ice cream, and chicken chili. Let me tell ya folks... Friends and food are two of my favorite things, so I was quite happy!
One thing did dampen my mood for a moment or three. I almost chopped off my thumb! The wound looks very small right now. In fact, when I look at it, I feel like I was being dumb to think it was bad. But then I remember bleeding for three or four minutes over the sink. And having to change my bandage when the first one soaked through. hahaha Why is it that the simple stuff is more dangerous to me than things that *look* more threatening?
We stayed up until two in the morning making boutonnieres and bouquets and watching Enchanted. Then we got up at seven the next morning to start all of the "Day Before" tasks. =)
I need to go get in bed so I don't sleep through church tomorrow! More of the story to come, though! Aaaaaaaand... 1,000 Smartness Points to anyone who correctly guesses what I checked off of my "100 Things" list!

Generally speaking, I like change. Something new and different always excites me. Yet sometimes, in the midst of the excitement, a little niggling of apprehension worms it's way in.
Is this really a good thing?
This week will bring a change around that, to be honest, I'm not sure that I'm ready for. Even though I'm thrilled about it. This change is probably one of the most drastic changes I've experienced in my nearly 20 years.
A wedding.
Not just any wedding. The wedding of one of my closest friends. Of course I've known for a loooooong time that this change was coming. But for some reason the reality of it is just now hitting me. Maybe her marriage won't bring as many changes as I think, but things will definitely be different.
Look at literature. When a girl's best friend gets married, the girl usually ends up leaving. hahaha Just think about it!
Diana gets married.
Anne runs off to Kingsport.
Meg gets married.
Jo runs off to New York.
Cynthia gets married.
Molly runs off to Africa.
Okay, okay. That last one is stretching it a little. But you get the picture. =D
Anyhow... I'm so thrilled for Erin! And I know that I'm worrying too much about the changes that may or may not really affect our friendship. I'm really more excited and happy than I am fearful.

Today was supposed to be really warm. It got warm enough to go without a jacket, but it wasn't hot or anything. Now it's chilly. And it's supposed to snow! I'm uber thrilled for the snow to come! =) Fall is probably my favorite season, but I look forward to winter and the holidays all the same.

Bobby pins (These essential hair helpers tend to evaporate after a month or so at my house. Anyone else have that problem?)
Styling gel
Okay, so I wasn't totally surprised at the lack of nice headbands. Target seems like a better place to go for that. Still, it's disappointing when you can't get what you need at Wally World.
Moving on to bobby pins? The rack was empty! How can they be out of BOBBY PINS?! I finally found a pack of 48 pins for 4 dollars. You do the math.
Yeah, four dollars divided by 48 bobby pins equals: totally dumb purchase IMO
Three strikes and you're out, eh? Not too hopeful about the styling gel. But I actually had the opposite problem here. They have about 50 or so types of styling gel. And as I said before, hair products are pretty foreign to me. So I have no clue if what I got will work or not. But at least I got something!
So that was the less productive part of my productive day. Oh, well.

Depends what I'm doing! Adventurous sometimes, calm at other times. A mix of Dear Frankie and Pirates of the Caribbean, I guess. hahaha

I guess I just count down each month from August until my birthday. I don't think about it a lot or anything... just on the 14th of each month. =D

It's Valentines Day. =D And I have simply incredible friends and family!

Meh... Not really

Reliable - Maybe not 100% of the time, but most of the time. If I make a commitment to someone, I do my best to fulfill it.
Imaginative - This is probably one of my best qualities, even though it's my worst character trait. It helps me relate to other people, but I also tend to get lost in my own little world.
Changeable - I like to blend in. Sometimes I am consciously making decisions to act in a manner that will (in my mind) make myself more agreeable to those around me... other times I realize that I'm acting/talking like other people without thinking about it.
Observant - Another good/bad thing. Sometimes I notice stuff that is useful (where someone leaves their iPod, where a store is off of the highway) and other times I notice stuff that I shouldn't. =P
Confusing - I guess I don't really even need to go into detail here. Just look at the first and third words that I used to describe myself! =P
Hey, everybody! Or... nobody. LOL I don't even know if anyone follows me anymore. I've been absent quite a lot lately. I was talking to one of my friends the other day, though, and I decided to start blogging again. I'm hoping to finish blogging about my summer and I have several other posts that I'm kinda wanting to do, too. We shall see!
Right now I'm needing to go shopping for some bobby pins and such. I'm going to be in one of my bestest friends' wedding in less than two weeks and I need to figure out how to do my hair. I think I'm going to try this. I hope I can do something at least a little bit cute-ish! I never do anything with my hair. I basically shampoo and brush it. Curling irons, straightening irons, blow dryers, hairspray, and any other hair products are pretty foreign to me. lol So... I need to practice a little this week and/or next week so that I won't totally botch the whole thing. =D
Anyhow... I'm going to go get some laundry in the dryer. But I'll be back! Maybe even by tomorrow! =)

The Bear Wallow Fire was started on Sunday, May 29, 2011. I heard about it on the same day. It was just an offhand comment about a fire near Hannigan Meadow caused by some careless people who didn't take care of their campfire. I didn't even think about the fire throughout the rest of Sunday or Monday morning. On Monday afternoon I smelled smoke, but I figured that the wind had just blown it over. For some reason I never even thought of the fact that if the wind was blowing the smoke, it was blowing the fire, too.
Around 2 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, the smoke was visible high above us. It eventually reached out and covered the sun, making everything look kinda orange. It was *very* cool. At that point, anyhow.
As the wind blew, I was aware of the smell of the smoke, but it sort of blew away so that it wasn't covering the sun anymore. I called my mom and asked her to pray that the fire wouldn't come to camp. I felt like I was being overly dramatic, but supposed it couldn't hurt.
On Wednesday morning everything looked pretty clear, but the smell of the smoke was present from the time I woke up. After lunch, the smoke from the fire began to reach up again, eventually covering the sun again. This time it didn't blow off, though. Instead, the covering over the sun got thicker and everything got darker. Right before dinner when I stepped outside it sounded like a light rain, but there was no rain. It was ash falling from the sky.
(You can see some blue sky on the bottom left. We had at least SOME blue sky all day Wednesday, but none on Thursday)

Everything looked foggy on Thursday morning. It wasn't red and yellow like Wednesday, just gray and bleak.
I actually wasn't worried at all. I remembered smoke settling into the valley in the morning where I lived during the wildfires in Colorado several years back. And those fires weren't really a threat. So I just figured that as the day went on the smoke would lift and everything would be fine. Buuuut... it didn't lift. Shortly after lunch we got the word, "We're going to evacuate". The forest service/fire officials told us that *if* we needed to evacuate, it wouldn't be until Friday, but we were going to leave anyhow.

As we packed, I pretty much lost track of time. Soon it was pitch black outside. I felt like it couldn't be that late, but as crazy as the day had been, I really had no clue what time it was. So as we drove down the road away from camp, I was surprised to see how it got continually lighter and lighter out until we were in broad daylight!

Sitting at Sonic for awhile breathing in the fresh air and seeing the smoke from Alpine was when I was finally struck by the gravity of the situation. And I realized that my summer was probably going to be somewhat different than I had imagined.
As you all know, I left Colorado in April. I really had no clue what to expect. My uncle told me that they could keep me busy, but I didn't really know what that busyness would include. One thing I did know? I was excited. For one thing, I was going to camp!!! For another thing, I was going EARLY!!! I don't think that anything could have dampened my spirits.
The trip to Arizona was pretty good. I love road trips! We got into Alpine pretty late, so I dumped my stuff into my cabin (fondly known as the Green Bean) and fell asleep without unpacking anything. I woke up in the morning when I heard a sound outside. It was a small herd of elk right outside my window! Some of you may not get this, but that one thing made me SUPER happy. I like a lot of things about the city, but I'm really a country girl at heart. Through and through. So the elk outside made me even more excited than I already was. =) Here are some pictures of the Green Bean:
I can't even remember everything that I did for those first couple of weeks, but I did stay busy! I cleaned out the two dorms... vacuumed (and/or swept) all of the floors and windowsills and mattresses and drawers and closets, washed the windows, cleaned the bathrooms. That sort of thing. One of the dorms took me 4 days to do by myself, so I was very grateful when I got some help on the second dorm. That one only took 2 days. =)
Another project that took 2 days was cleaning out the paintball shed. At least one, if not two, pack rats had lived there all winter. That job goes on my "Top 3 Most Disgusting Things I've Done in My Life" list, but I actually had fun! When you are all by yourself in a shed for several hours is an awesome time for praying. Not that I prayed all day. I also did some singing. I sang songs from Tangled, Anastasia, and Phantom of the Opera... and I didn't bother one. single. person. Ah... that's the life! ;)

I did a hundred other random things around the camp, but I won't bore you with all of that. =D The two other "bigger" projects I did were cleaning the staff lounge and planting flowers. And I didn't do many flowers compared to Mrs. Roberts... she is the queen of flowers! =) I did pick out one pretty pink flower and I planted it specifically for my dear friend Bailey, since she likes pink. I think I was a tad homesick that day:
It was super exciting (and a tad strange) when the rest of the staff started to arrive. I couldn't wait to get to know everybody. We started staff training and everything was going well. I was happy and excited and wondering what God would teach me over the summer through the campers and the speakers. Little did I know that God had planned out some lessons from waaaaaay different teachers than I had imagined.

I don't know how much I will be posting this week. One of my very bestest friends ever is getting married in November and I'm going to go spend some of the week with her. Hopefully we can get bridesmaid dresses picked out! =D
Anyhow... That's the plan for what I'll be blogging about for a bit. I thought I'd pop in and let you all know that I'm still here. =)
Soo.... I've been back in Colorado for a week now. I apologize for not blogging sooner. Hopefully I can get back into the swing of things on here! I had about 300 unread blog subscriptions, so getting through those has been somewhat slow. Hopefully I can finish soon and maybe even comment on a few of ya'll's blogs. =D
Well, I'm not going to go into a lot of detail about my summer today just because I don't feel like it. (Gotta get back into blogging mode) I suppose I could try to put it in a nutshell for you, though. After we got evacuated due to the fire, the staff spent a week at International Baptist College in Chandler, AZ area. From there we went to the San Carlos Indian Reservation to do some work with Regeneration Ministries. After our time with Regeneration we were finally able to get back into Alpine. We had about a week that was just cleanup... fire makes a big *big* mess, in case you were wondering. Following our getting camp ship-shape, we had 3 weeks of camp. It was awesome! I am definitely planning on going back next summer if God allows.
Anyhow... That's pretty much just the surface of the nutshell. I'll either give you a deeper nutshell view later or even the whole shabang. =D For now I just wanted to pop in and say 'hi' and 'I've missed you' and let you know that I'm around again!
Okay.... This isn't around the campfire. It's the forest fire around us. I took tons of pictures today, but I only uploaded a couple 'cause 1. it's late and 2. I don't want to tie up the internet. Anyhow.... Here is some of the smoke that I've been inhaling most of the day:
That little pink dot in the center of this picture is all I've seen of the sun since around 1:30. You can kinda see it in the picture above, too.
The "Green Bean" with a bunch of smoke behind it. At least *some* of the smoke is pretty. Most of it is just a nasty gray-orange that made everything... the trees, the ground, the buildings, etc etc etc look orange.
Anyhow, we've been getting rained on by ashes. There's both black and white ash everywhere. Right now it looks like the camp will be fine, but prayers would be appreciated. =D
